The premiere of the documentary Columbus DNA. Its true origin on Spanish Radio
Television on October 12, 2024, the day of the national holiday of Hispanidad, has
resurrected the debate on the social origin of Admiral Christopher Columbus. After a
series of genetic tests, the aforementioned documentary concluded that the most likely
hypothesis is that it came from a family of Jewish-converted silk weavers who lived in
15th century Valencia. This hypothesis is justified by various indications that do not
contradict the idea of Columbus' humble origins, accepted by the absolute majority of the
scientific community. In that sense, Columbus was part of a family of wool weavers who
emigrated first to Genoa and then to Savona from the rural environment of Liguria. The
existing lack of news about the first thirty years of the admiral's life since his birth in 1451
is what allows new research challenges.
